Window replacement cost by number of windows
Most people replace several windows at once, so the total is what matters. Angi’s 2026 data puts the average project at $7,348, based on nearly 18,000 jobs.
| Number of windows | Typical total cost |
|---|---|
| 6-8 | $4,500-$6,000 |
| 8-12 | $6,000-$9,000 |
| 12-16 | $9,000-$12,000 |
| 16-20 | $12,000-$15,000 |
| 20-24 | $15,000-$18,000 |
| 25 | $18,000-$20,000 |

Per window, Angi’s average is $750. Fixr’s is a little higher at $800, with most windows between $450 and $1,200. Fixr puts a single-story home with 10 to 15 windows at $8,000 to $12,000, and a two-story home with 15 to 30 windows at $12,000 to $24,000.
Cost by window type
Style changes the price more than anything else. Simple windows that slide or open on one sash are cheapest. Bay and bow windows, which stick out from the wall, cost the most.
| Window type | Angi (per window) | Fixr (per window) |
|---|---|---|
| Single-hung | $100-$400 | $250-$700 |
| Double-hung | $150-$650 | $300-$1,000 |
| Casement | $150-$1,000 | $400-$1,200 |
| Picture | $65-$700 | $300-$1,600 |
| Awning | $400-$950 | $300-$800 |
| Bay | $900-$7,100 | $900-$4,500 |
| Bow | $1,500-$6,500 | $1,500-$8,000 |
| Skylight | $900-$2,500 | $800-$2,500 |
Sources: Angi, Oct 2026; Fixr, Jan 2026.
The two sources differ because they measure slightly differently, but they agree on the order: single-hung and double-hung are the budget picks, and bay and bow windows can cost as much as several standard windows combined.
Cost by frame material and glass
| Frame material | Angi (per window) | Fixr (per window) |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | $75-$400 | $200-$800 |
| Vinyl | $100-$900 | $350-$800 |
| Wood | $150-$1,300 | $600-$2,000 |
| Composite | $300-$1,200 | $300-$2,500 |
| Fiberglass | $500-$1,500 | $400-$1,500 |
Sources: Angi, Oct 2026; Fixr, Jan 2026.
Vinyl is the budget middle ground: low cost and low upkeep. Inch Calculator puts installed vinyl windows at $400 to $800. Wood and fiberglass cost more but suit older homes and look closer to the original.
Glass adds up too. Angi lists double-pane windows at $500 to $2,000 and triple-pane at $1,000 to $4,000 each. Low-E coatings, which reflect heat, run $300 to $1,100 per window.
Labor and installation type
Labor is about 30% of the total, according to Fixr. Angi puts standard installation at $100 to $300 per window, rising to $600 or more for complex jobs.
The biggest labor choice is how the window goes in:
| Installation type | Cost per window | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Retrofit (insert) | $100-$300 | New window fits inside the old frame |
| Full-frame | $180-$1,500 | Old frame comes out down to the studs |
| Glass only | $200-$400 | Only the pane is replaced |
Source: Angi, Oct 2026.
A retrofit is cheaper and faster when the old frame is solid. Full-frame is the right call if there is rot, water damage or you want a different size.
If only the glass is cracked or foggy between the panes, you may not need a whole new window. Inch Calculator puts glass-only replacement at $280 to $350, close to Angi’s $200 to $400, which is far less than most full replacements.
Cost by room
Where the window sits changes the job. Angi breaks prices down by room, and the biggest outliers are basement egress windows and large bay windows in reading nooks.
| Room | Cost per window |
|---|---|
| Basement (standard) | $200-$1,000 |
| Basement (egress) | $2,000-$5,000 |
| Bathroom | $300-$1,000 |
| Bedroom | $300-$1,000 |
| Dining area | $300-$1,000 |
| Kitchen | $300-$1,500 |
| Reading nook (bay) | $900-$7,100 |

Egress windows cost more because they are an escape route. They have to be large enough to climb through, which often means cutting a bigger opening in the foundation wall and digging a window well outside. Bathroom windows often use tempered or frosted glass for safety and privacy; Fixr lists tempered glass at $250 to $800 and frosted at $350 to $800 per window.
Extra costs to budget for
- Permits and inspections: $50 to $300, per Fixr.
- Structural repairs: $100 to $2,000 or more if the installer finds rot or water damage, per Angi.
- Older or historic homes: $100 to $500 more per window, per Angi.
- Cleanup and haul-away: $55 to $65 an hour if not included in the quote, per Angi.
- Hurricane impact windows: Angi notes that in Florida even simple single-hung impact windows run $1,200 to $1,500 each, including permits.
How to pay less
- Replace in batches. Doing several windows at once can cost less per window than doing one at a time, since the crew sets up once. Ask for a per-window price at different quantities.
- Choose retrofit where the frames are sound. At $100 to $300 per window for installation versus up to $1,500 for full-frame (Angi), the savings add up fast over 10 windows.
- Stick with standard sizes and styles. Custom shapes start at $1,000 or more per window on both Angi and Fixr.
- Pick vinyl or composite unless you need wood. They cover most homes well at a lower price.
- Get three itemized quotes. Ask each installer to list the window, labor, trim, disposal and permit separately.
Are new windows worth it?
New windows will not pay for themselves on energy alone, but they help. Angi says ENERGY STAR certified windows cut bills by an average of 12% a year, and cites the Department of Energy for 7% to 15%. Heating and cooling are the biggest part of most utility bills, so the savings are larger in very hot or cold climates.
The bigger reasons are comfort, less noise, and fixing drafts, rot or broken seals. If you are updating the outside of the house, it often makes sense to time windows with the exterior house painting cost or the roof replacement cost, so trim and flashing are only disturbed once.

Common questions
How much does it cost to replace 10 windows?
At Angi's average of $750 per window, 10 windows come to about $7,500 (our calculation). Angi lists $6,000 to $9,000 for 8 to 12 windows, and Fixr puts a single-story home with 10 to 15 windows at $8,000 to $12,000.
Is it cheaper to replace windows in the frame?
Yes. Angi lists a retrofit (insert) installation at $100 to $300 per window, versus $180 to $1,500 for a full-frame installation. Full-frame costs more but lets the installer fix rot or damage in the old frame.
